Player ratings: Chelsea v Manchester City
Hart – Once again showed sound handling and judgement. Pulled off several good saves and was unlucky with his attempt to palm out David Luiz’s opener. 7
Richards – Appeared very unlucky to concede the free-kick which led to the first goal. Forced to concentrate on the defensive side of his game, and the focus shown by the new look Micah was impressive. 7
Lescott – Kept Torres and co quiet in another accomplished display. The partnership with Kompany is looking stronger by the game. 7
Kompany – He may not be getting the praise of David Luiz, but Vincent was immense once again. Good to see him wearing the captain’s armband – it fits him well. 8
Kolarov – In a first half when neither attack looked like getting in behind the other team’s defence, Kolarov’s crosses were one of the few dangers. Chelsea’s lack of width spared him defensively though his lack of sharpness on the ball was disappointing. 6
De Jong – Whenever Chelsea threatened to dominate, up stepped Nigel. Highlight was chasing and catching Torres to put in a great block. 8
Barry – The least conspicuous of our midfielders. His unseen work may be valuable, but in games like this he needs to show more. 6
Y Toure (A Johnson 81 mins) – Started brightly and carried a threat into Chelsea territory. Faded as knocks and fatigue took their toll. 6
Milner (Balotelli 81 mins) – Roamed between the flank and the central areas. Once again offered little attacking threat but James’ industry was useful. 6
Silva – In a decent opening for City, David was a key player knitting together our possession with intelligent passing and movement. Unable to find the killer pass and his influence waned as the game wore on. 6
Dzeko – Until he adapts to the physicality of the English game, Edin’s excellent technique will be lost. Once again needed to do better at holding the ball up. 6
Subs:
A Johnson – Not able to make an impact. Being left out of the England squad indicates Adam still has work to do on his fitness. 5
Balotelli – Also unable to make an impact – either good or bad. 5
Man of the match: Nigel de Jong.
