Champions League player ratings: Napoli v Manchester City
Hart – Might have done better trying to stop Cavani’s second with his foot rather than hand. Pulled off a couple of excellent saves in the second half to keep us in the contest. 6
Kolarov – Fears over his lack of pace proved fully justified. Not quick enough to cause problems in attack nor to relieve them in defence. 5
Zabaleta (A Johnson 85) – Presumably selected to keep a close eye on his compatriot Lavezzi and wasn’t hugely successful. Needed more cover to prevent Dossena from overlapping, while also being less effective going forward than Richards. 6
Kompany – Endured some uncomfortable moments but kept going when exposed to the sharp movement of the Naples attack. 6
Lescott – Never able to dominate as he did against Newcastle or Spain. The gap between Joleon and Kolarov offered too much space for Hamsik and others. 6
Milner – By far our best player in the opening period as he sought to take the game to Napoli. Less influential in the second period. 7
Silva – Not his most effective evening but the way he kept going and trying to find the breakthrough was impressive. Had a hand in the goal and did all he could to engineer a second one. 7
De Jong (Nasri 70) – By attacking down the sides, Napoli seemed to bypass his defensive shield. Never able to exert the authority he had shown at the weekend. 6
Y Toure – Wasn’t tight enough on Cavani for the opening goal and set the tone for the sloppy start to the second half by carelessly losing possession. 5
Dzeko (Aguero 81) – Suffered from a lack of good quality service and was crowded out by the Napoli back three. 5
Balotelli – Scored one, could have had a couple more but for excellent saves by De Sanctis, and should have done better with one headed chance that went over. At times looked a little too eager to impress on his return to Italy. 6
Subs:
Nasri – Should have come on earlier. His tidy passing was needed to link up with Silva to work an opening. 6
Aguero – Should have come on earlier. Looked a goal threat as his footwork and shooting were able to cause problems. 6
A Johnson – Should have come on earlier. A couple of errant crosses didn’t take away from the fact that Adam provided desperately needed width and caused Napoli problems. 6
Man of the match: David Silva.
