For anyone wondering why Brian Kidd and David Platt failed as managers, this game provided ample explanation. The sooner Roberto Mancini returns to instil some purpose into this side the better. A few more players wouldn’t go amiss either.

Thankfully the likes of Tevez, de Jong, Boateng and Silva are ready to step up. Milner, Dzeko, Balotelli and Luiz could all have added something to this game.

Friendly preview: Manchester City v Borussia Dortmund

City take on Borussia Dortmund for the Ferrostaal Cup this evening and City fans will be hoping for their glimpse of Aleksandar Kolarov. Whether Roberto Mancini is also there remains to be seen.

It’s to be hoped he can make it back from Italy as the friendly against Inter proved little more than a fitness exercise where his absence combined with Patrick Vieira’s sending off to leave the blues focused on damage limitation.

Friendly: City 0 Inter Milan 3

A friendly that wasn’t so friendly saw Patrick Vieira seeing red midway through the first half and from then on proved to be a damage limitation exercise for City against a polished Inter side.

Both sides were lacking several World Cup players and City also had the handicap of being without their manager. We could have done with him to reorganise the team in the wake of Vieira’s dismissal.

Portland Timbers 0 Manchester City 3

City began pre-season with a 3-0 victory against a competitive Portland Timbers, who were given plenty of backing by an enthusiastic 5,000 sell-out crowd.

Ireland and Adebayor grabbed a goal each shortly before half-time. Both came courtesy of crosses by Adam Johnson. City changed everyone except Cunningham at half-time and managed a third courtesy of the inimatble Jo.
