Player ratings: Manchester City v Liverpool
Hart – A stunning double save to protect our two goal lead brought a standing ovation. Great to see him at Eastlands again. 8
Richards – A teriffic return after a torrid time against Gareth Bale. Micah thoroughly dominated his opponent in one of his best ever defensive displays. 8
K Toure – Showing the form of his Arsenal “invincible” days. Read the game and timed his interceptions to perfection. Good to see Kolo constantly encouraging and organising his team-mates. 8
Kompany – Another dominant performance at centre-back. Strong in the tackle, powerful in the air, composed on the ball – Vincent is in great form. 8
Lescott – His distribution in attack may not be the best, but his primary job is to defend and that was done superbly. Incredibly solid and strong for a full-back, giving Kuyt nothing. 8
Y Toure (Zabaleta 85mins) – Supposedly a defensive midfielder, Yaya was moved forward to play in the hole. His ability to shield the ball and spray passes long and short was crucial in taking the game to Liverpool. His Barca credentials are shown in 36 out of 37 passes being successfully completed. 8
De Jong – The kind of game where Nigel is crucial in keeping opponents at bay. He excelled, providing a terrific barrier and never allowing Gerrard space around the penalty area. 8
Milner – So much for taking time to gel. James came in and did his job excellently, showing just the combination of endeavour and skill for which Mancini signed him. Does anyone doubt the wisdom of his signing now? 8
Barry – Maybe it was having Milner alongside him that saw Gareth give the kind of performance that made him a hero at Villa Park. Showed quality in his passing and provided an excellent foil for his fellow midfielders. Great to see him get into the opponents area to score the vital first goal. 8
A Johnson – Maybe it’s all these years watching SWP, but it’s a joy to have a winger who so rarely gives the ball away. Adam gave both Agger and Skrtel a torrid time in his first start of the season. More than anyone, he gives us a cutting edge in attack with the belief he can beat any full-back. 8
Tevez (Jo 85mins) – Playing as a lone striker against a Liverpool defence is no easy task. Carlos made it work thanks to his excellent touch and control, allied to movement that sees him roam around the pitch. Another confident penalty, but did he really get a touch for the second goal? 8
Subs:
Zabaleta – Came on to help close out the match and barely had a touch. 6
Jo – Intriguing to see him appear ahead of Adebayor. Endeavoured to hold the ball up and bring others into play. 6
Man of the match: Giving everyone 8 shows what a great team performance this was, but if we have to single out one player… Adam Johnson.

Johnson got my vote too, maybe a few of those players were worthy of a 9 and no, I’m not getting carried away…
